Team Up Philly was asked to design a program for Sports For Juvenile Justice, a unique initiative that places adjudicated youth into sports-based youth development programs. Every Tuesday evening a group of teenage girls can be found hard at work at Elite Sports Factory learning fitness and basketball drills from Team Up Philly coaches. The group spends a second hour in the classroom, sharing nutritious snacks and engaging in character-building activities; conflict resolution, positive communication, anger management, goal-setting and creating healthy relationships are key areas of focus. The girls become a strong source of support, encouraging each other to make positive choices in their lives.
SJJ is a collaboration between the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Family Court, the Philadelphia Department of Human Services, the Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative, Northeast Treatment Centers and CustomEd.
