76er Tobias Harris gives $1M to support literacy

We wish you could have heard the excited screaming when Tobias Harris announced Team Up Philly as the 9th pick in his 2019 Community Draft!

On Tuesday, October 22nd, Philadelphia 76ers Tobias Harris committed a million dollars to support literacy initiatives, both global and local. Team Up Philly was thrilled and grateful to be awarded $25,000 to support our tutoring programs.

Our academic approach: Developing skills, inspiring curiosity, and building academic confidence. Team Up Philly provides two afternoons of academic enrichment (one at Friends’ Central Upper School, and another at Ludington Library in Bryn Mawr) where groups of volunteers work with our young students on math & writing skills, work & study habits, and to spark a love of learning.

Starting with the idea that “if you can see it, you can be it”, students learn about inspirational women, social justice warriors, and athletes who changed the world for the better. Poetry, Book Club, math games, public speaking, and debating all help the young girls find their own voices and grow in confidence.

100% of the girls who participate in TUP programs graduate high school (over 98% in four years) in a city where the four-year graduation rate in 2017 was 67%.

Thanks to Tobias, more girls will have the opportunity to join them. THANK YOU, TOBIAS!
