Celebrating Dr. Nikki Franke, 2024’s Jay Barry Harris Hero of the Year

We are absolutely thrilled to share some incredible news. We are honoring the legendary Dr. Nikki Franke with 2024’s Jay Barry Harris Hero of the Year award at our annual Be a Hero fundraising event on May 2nd, 2024!

Dr. Franke's journey in sports and coaching is nothing short of extraordinary. From her days as an Olympic athlete to her groundbreaking coaching career at Temple University, she has left an indelible mark on the world of fencing and beyond.

Dr. Franke proudly represented the United States as a member of the 1976 and 1980 U.S. Olympic Fencing teams. Notably, she clinched the title of USA Fencing National Foil Champion in both 1975 and 1980.

But that's not all—Coach Franke's impact extended far beyond her exceptional athletic achievements. She pioneered the establishment of the women's fencing program at Temple University from the ground up, transforming it into an NCAA Division I powerhouse. Over her illustrious 50-year coaching career, she achieved an astonishing 898 victories, solidifying her status as one of the most successful collegiate fencing coaches in history.

What makes Dr. Franke's story even more inspiring is her role as a trailblazer. When she retired in 2022, she was the first and only Black female Head Coach of an NCAA Division I fencing program. Her impact extends far beyond the fencing strip; she's an Associate Professor Emerita at Temple University's College of Public Health, where she dedicated over four decades to educating and inspiring students.

Beyond her personal achievements, Dr. Franke is deeply committed to empowering the next generation of athletes. She co-founded the Black Women in Sport Foundation, an organization dedicated to introducing youth to non-traditional sports and mentoring women of color.

Given her incredible list of accomplishments, it’s no wonder Dr. Franke has been inducted into five Halls of Fame and received countless honors throughout her career. Her resilience, leadership, and dedication serve as an inspiration to us all.

Join us in celebrating Dr. Nikki Franke, our Jay Barry Harris Hero of 2024. We invite you to honor this remarkable woman who continues to pave the way for future generations of athletes and leaders.

Dr. Nikki Franke will be honored at this year’s 18th annual Be A Hero fundraising event & auction on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at the Merion Tribute House.

Congratulations, Dr. Franke—thank you for being an extraordinary role model and trailblazer in the world of sports!

About the Jay Barry Harris Hero of the Year Award
Jay Harris was a man of impeccable integrity, who devoted his time and talents to many causes including Team Up Philly. As a board member, he brought his wisdom, guidance and wit to our mission. In his quest to make a difference in his professional life, Jay focused on concussions occurring in NFL players and claims arising from the fracking industry. Jay’s selfless sense of citizenship, belief that it was his responsibility to share his gifts, and his commitment to making the world a better place, led us to name this annual award in his memory and honor.
